Title: "Catholicism"

Experience/gained information:
Before i started this art piece i got demonstration of how to make a dry point. I found out to do this piece step by step, i gained information on how to do this kind of art that i was introduced to. Its very simple to do but like as the block printing you have to be very patient on getting a perfect print. But unlike the the block printing it has more steps to do that are more complicated. Such as when you carve in you are carving out things that will be black instead of white or plain color. As well as when you put the ink onto the glass you have to wipe off all the other ink you don't need off your glass so that part could be clear instead of black.Lastly, another different step is that you have to put the glass into a bigger roller machine so that it could help make the printing much better and clearer.
Sketches: I developed 3 sketches for my Dry point. The first one I tried one theme that I really admired but then after a while I thought I can just use the same thing as my block print. So then I did my two last sketches about my religion. I admired more of the third sketch because it showed like the clear idea I had in mind.
Reflection-While looking at my piece I can say that I love it, i love how it came out very nice and clear. There wouldn't be really anything I would want to change from it. I like how it looks so elegant and nicely put out. The hardest thing doing this process was taking off all the extra ink that wasn't needed in the piece. It was rough taking that thick ink off, as well as making sure you have a good outcome of a clear printing. On my first try it was horrible, it came so nasty and unclear but I noticed I had to carve out a bit harder in order to get it bolder on the paper, so I tried that and it worked. I am honestly satisfied of my piece.
Process-1.)Sketch put ideas of what you want to transmit through the dry point.
2.)After piking which sketch you want you transmit it into the clear template. 3.)With the carving tool you want to carve out what ever you want to be bold( black). 4.)After grab the dry point printing sheets and leave it in a bin of water for 8 minutes. 5.)Now with the ink spread it out on the template, you only need a little not a lot because it'll be harder to take off. 6.)Remove all ink that didn't go into the carvings you made. 7.)When your done doing that transmit your template drawing onto the paper that was soaking for 8 minutes through the big roller. |
Artist inspirations:
Frida Kahlo- Kahlo was deeply influenced by indigenous Mexican culture, which is apparent in her use of bright colors and dramatic symbolism. Which I can reflect on because Since she used symbolism I as well wanted use symbolism. Which in my piece I used the cross to symbolize my catholic religion and then the sun to represent as god. But overall the way all her pieces have a culture background or even a religion background is what caught my attention into making a piece that does the same thing.

Kathe Kollowitz- She was a German expressionist artist who created timeless art works against the backdrop of a life of great sorrow, hardship and heartache. I used her as an artist inspiration because she incorporated things that were important to and that stood out and I as well wanted to do that in my piece too with religion. Just like with Frida I liked the intention of this piece too. It just all ties in together which was the main idea that I wanted to do for my piece.

Failures:My first print was a major failure for me. Before doing the first print I wasn't sure of what I was doing at all. During the first try I think I might have taken off so much ink off my dry point so that when I copied it into the paper it didn't show up as much. But on the other hand I learned from my mistakes and what things I could approve on so on my second try I got the hang of what to do and how to do the ink and copy process right. On my second try I thought it came out nice but not quiet good because I think I could at least carve into the glass more so that the ink could stay more into the carved areas. It could also make the print more clearer and darker, and so it did. But there was some areas where I could have left more ink into the carved areas. Which I did and came out with my final piece( showed up above ) which came to be my 3rd and final piece.
Meaning behind the piece-The meaning behind my piece was I wanted to incorporate my religion into a piece now that i already incorporated culture because to my culture and religion is very important. My religion is catholic, and I love it. I know that everyone has a different religion and everyone believes in different things. I myself am very interested in my religion, I know a lot about it but I love to learn even more about it. Just like my block point I wanted to view that I'm proud to be who I am. As well as showing others of my background information but through art and symbolism.
