Title:The city in the future
Medium:Wood on canvas
size:30.48 cm X 30.48 cm
April 2016
Exhibition text:
The aim of this project was to recreate an urban landscape using wood, cardboard and other found and ready made materials. The parts of the structures were to intentionally illuminate light and shadow to the rest of the sculpture as well. This urban landscape was inspired by both Zaha hadid and the Milwaukee art museum’s structure. Zaha Hadid designed urban landscapes that had a geometrical figure and as well as a unique style. Which the unique style was the intention of Ashley’s piece as a whole.
Process photosMy process was very easy to do. First you buy a 1 ft X 1ft canvas and then sketch on the lines that you want to be cut onto the canvas. After that you then cut in the lines. Thirdly you than experiment with all the wood and cardboard, putting them into different places. And then lastly, after I found out where I would want to place my blocks and all you then wood glue them all onto the canvas. Once your done with that you put your canvas above the light box and take your pictures.

I chose part of the Milwaukee art museum as an inspiration only because I like the piece that is shown in the picture on the left that this piece seems to be the main structure of the whole piece. It seems to stand out than the rest of the structure as well as catching the viewer's attention too. which I wanted to do in my piece of course, having the viewer's attention towards your piece. As well as having a main structure will have the viewer follow through the objects around the main structure allowing them to understand how those other pieces make the main piece pop out more.

Zaha was one of my inspirations because once I looked at her work I saw that she likes to be very unique when designing and building the buildings that she has in mind. I admire the way she uses geometric shapes and figures in her pieces and as well as how some of her buildings have some type of illusion and pattern in them. Which inspired me to do the same, by having unique figures in my piece and as well as allowing geometric shapes and figure to stand out in my piece too.
Research on Zaha : In all her work, Hadid is concerned with movement and speed—both the way people will move through the buildings and the way a sight line travels through light and shadow. Her exteriors seem to be shaped by the movement inside and around them, rather than by some predetermined notion of external form as stated in newyorker.com. Seabrook, J. (2009, December 21). Behind the meaning:My main goal for this piece was to make a futuristic city. A city that will have a main structure that sticks out from everything else just like so in my piece where I have a triangular shaped structure in the middle of the piece. But then I also wanted the other things surrounding the triangle but also following the cut lines at the same time to make some pattern like as well. Lastly, another goal I wanted was to not have so much clutter in the piece since there was only an amount of negative space that was on the piece, so with the negative space I would like to handle it nicely and neatly. But overall I wanted the whole piece itself to look like a big city that is created in the future.

Reflection:I think that overall my piece was very nice, like I used up a good amount of space from my canvas. As well as how I followed the advice from the structure with having patterns with the cut lines that were on the board. Another thing I enjoyed from my piece was the main structure of the piece. I really liked How it stood out from everything else. But then after the MIAD I got the feedback of having some of my piece to stick out o the canvas because it will point the viewers attention away from the main structures of the piece. Which I thought was very true. So if I could I would change that part from my piece and a bit more other things that they mentioned as well. Other than that I really admired my futuristic city piece.
