Milwaukee Flag Design
Title: Milwaukee flag design
|
ProcessResearch: The first part of my process was to do some research on Milwaukee. Even though I live in this big city, I don't really know some history about it. The research I had to encounter was past history, not the present history because I had to show what times were effective to Milwaukee or time periods that Milwaukee was being known for. Especially because the flag should represent the history overall for Milwaukee and how the history effects the people in Milwaukee overall.
sketches:Requirements to have a good flag:- keep it simple
- use meaningful symbolism - Use 2-3 basic colors from the standard color set - No lettering or seals ( no words of any kind) - be distinctive ( or be related) Meaning behind the piece:The meaning behind this piece is to create a better flag for our city, Milwaukee because knowing that our flag that we have isn't quite good. There was a lot of work to be done to make the Milwaukee flag much better but instead the big idea was to re make the flag from scratch. So I just thought maybe this experience could be a very good one because you never know if the flag you actually design could be a very good one or maybe even become the new Milwaukee flag. This piece can make a big change on how other will see our city as instead of just having that flag that we have now. Our city flag needs to be representing us and symbolize something about us.

My other designs:The First design i created was based on Milwaukee being the 22nd largest city in America( Infoplease. com) So i incorporated the same thing as my final design with the star idea but instead i used 22 stars for this. Then for the second flag design i just simply used the same background as my final piece put put the letter " M" to represent Milwaukee. I wanted to be as simple as possible just for having it as an idea. Lastly, my third flag design i wanted to go a different way. I used a whole different kind of idea. I found some research on Milwaukee based on the great lakes we have. But i also knew some things about it so i put the information together , and came out as saying that Milwaukee is located on the shores on lake Michigan, One of the great five Great lakes of North America and the only one located entirely within the United states(Wikipedia. com) . So then on the flag the blue curved lines represent the lake and how i just included a sun in the back to make sense.
artist inspiration:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_Chicago
For my artist inspiration I wanted to use another city's flag from different states. One inspiration I chose happens to be the Chicago city flag which i thought had a very symbolism, especially with the four stars having each and one of them represent a different event or important history of Chicago. This flag was designed by Wallace Rice, and was adopted in 1917 but then years later on in 1928 he provided a description of its symbolism. Then in 1933&1939 the city council added two more stars. But In my flag I would want the same type of thing, having a shape or even a star that represents something about Milwaukee as a whole just like so in Chicago's flag.
Reflection:This piece to me was actually very interesting doing because while your working on creating a new flag, You are also developing some new information that you've never knew about Milwaukee. I's a great experience finding new information about you city but then using it in a creative way. But some difficulties you can have in this process is meeting the requirements to making a good flag because I know there is people who are very out-going and would like to put more things on a flag, which that type of person is me. But other than that, this was a very interesting and creative piece.
